Museum of agriculture

Sarka has been designed as a museum, whose basic architecture draws heavily on old traditions and authentic materials. The beautiful rural landscape has been incorporated into the building.

Sarka is built around its own intimate and visitor-friendly small-scale courtyard, opening up to the surrounding fields. The plantings and fields are part of the landscape and are also closely linked to the exhibition itself.

Clay brick was the natural choice as the main building material for the museum in Loimaa, as Loimaa is known to be an old red clay area with a traditional brick industry. The shape and sculptural nature of the building are emphasized by its strong uniformity. The shape of the roof and the height of the building make it a visible landmark in the landscape. Copper, wood, and concrete, among other materials, have been used as complementary materials, taking into account the public nature of the building and longevity.

In addition to the main exhibition hall, the museum was designed with another dominant feature visible from the outside and the lobby: Riihi, a multi-purpose space for 100 people, which, like its historical model, is a fragrant wooden building with almost black walls.
