AkvaCity Represents a Sustainable Future
AkvaCity is the first wood-frame office building in the city of Turku and a pioneering project in sustainable construction. Commissioned by Turku Technology Properties and constructed by Jatke Länsi-Suomi, the two-storey, 2,400-square-metre building now serves as the headquarters for Turku Water Utilities (Turun Vesihuolto), accommodating approximately 80 employees since May.
The building’s primary construction material is Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT), a sustainable choice that supports both structural integrity and ecological goals. Timber construction defines the project’s character, with the long-term ambition that its climate benefits will fully offset the emissions generated during construction—setting a new benchmark in sustainable office solutions.
The façade, treated with OrganoWood technology, evolves beautifully over time with a naturally graying finish. This innovative treatment not only enhances the building’s aesthetic appeal but also improves durability and reduces maintenance needs.
AkvaCity has been designed and implemented with a strong focus on life-cycle efficiency and maximum energy performance. The project is currently pursuing LEED v4 Platinum certification—the highest standard in environmental building performance.
