A Landmark Reimagined
Hietalahdenranta 13, a former office building in the heart of Helsinki, was transformed into refined, contemporary apartments. Originally completed in 1957 as the headquarters of Yhtyneet Kuvalehdet, the building was designed by Finnish functionalis architects Märta Blomstedt and Matti Lampén. Its thoughtful conversion honored the spirit of the original design while adapting it to modern residential needs.
The building’s location—where the sea opens out and the Bulevardi begins—offered a rich historical and architectural setting. The surrounding streetscape, marked by layers of Art Nouveau and Modernist architecture, framed the project in a meaningful cultural context. Many of the building’s original features were carefully preserved, including the elegant staircase railings and the distinctive floor markings of the old lifts, lending character and continuity to the renewed interiors.
Now completed, the project—named Status Artis, Latin for “state of the art”—has brought new life to the structure. The original concrete frame, maintained in excellent condition, remained intact throughout the renovation, providing both environmental benefits and architectural continuity. Today, Hietalahdenranta 13 stands as a harmonious blend of past and present, offering residents a living experience rooted in history and elevated by modern design.
