Kaartin Lasaretti Block

Kaartin Lasaretti Block, Helsinki

A historic quarter comes to life

The Kaarti Lasaretti Block is located in the southern part of Helsinki’s downtown area. The block consists originally of six separate buildings. Originally constructed for hospital use, two of the oldest buildings in the block were designed by Carl Ludvig Engel in the 1820s. These, along with a third building, the Uusi Lasaretti completed in 1884, are all listed and protected in the new city plan as well.

SARC has prepared the block’s city zoning amendment. The total scope of the city plan change is 20,200 GFA, of which 11,000 GFA is new construction.

SARC, as the main and architectural designer, has overseen the renovation of the three protected buildings. The first two buildings were completed in 2022 and the third one is, at the moment, in construction.

SARC is also responsible for the renovation and expansion of the 1940s VTT building, as well as the design of a new office building with six floors. Additionally, an extensive underground parking facility and a large grocery store are being planned beneath the entire block. The old wooden storage buildings have been relocated from the block and will be refurbished for new use.
