Turku

The new buildings will complete the renewal of Kauppatori

Our proposal has won the invitational architectural competition in Turku. The competition and zoning change aim to enable commercial and office development at the edge of the market square while respecting the values of the Orthodox Church.

The project consists of two building masses on the northwestern edge of Turku Market Square in Yliopistonkatu 17 and 21. The plan includes a hotel facing Aurakatu and commercial and office spaces at the corner of Kauppiaskatu. The jury described the proposal as timeless, symmetrical, harmonious, and well-scaled to its surroundings. The design’s integration with the urban environment was also praised.

This project is particularly meaningful to us, as the new buildings will complete the renewal of Turku Market Square into a cohesive whole. We previously won the design competition for Kauppatori in 2020 and have since actively worked on developing the area into a shared living space for all residents and visitors. Next we will proceed with the zoning change, which has been approved by the city council
