The renovation of the Government Palace (Valtioneuvoston Linna) will modernise the building’s workspaces and building services while improving energy efficiency and accessibility.
The project aims to support the work of the Finnish Government and its evolving needs, make more efficient use of the premises, and enhance the overall level of security. The objective is to create a solution that ensures the building’s use as Government office premises. The future spatial solutions will be flexible and adaptable, enabling the building to respond to the changing needs of the Government over time.
The renewed premises will be efficient, healthy, safe and comfortable, while also respecting the representative character of the building and the requirements of building conservation.
The project follows Senate Properties’ guidelines for reducing the carbon footprint, with the aim of carrying out the renovation with lower carbon emissions than conventional construction.
Located on the edge of Senate Square in Helsinki, the main wing of the Government Castle was inaugurated in September 1822. The surrounding block structure was completed gradually between 1824 and 1885. The Government Castle is a central monument of Finnish architecture, cultural history and political history, as well as a national landmark originally built for Finland’s central administration. The main parts of the building were designed by architect Carl Ludvig Engel.
